Explore Kirkwood Atlanta: Local Shops, Historic Homes, Parks & Trails

Just four miles east of downtown Atlanta, Kirkwood is a neighborhood where historic charm and vibrant community life blend beautifully. Strolling through Kirkwood feels like stepping into a living story: front porches where neighbors wave hello, locally owned shops and cafés where owners greet you by name, and a spirit that's as rich as its history.

Kirkwood’s History: A Walk Through Time

In the 1870s, Kirkwood began as a rural retreat for Atlanta’s political leaders, known for peaceful farms and wide-open spaces. The arrival of the streetcar in 1891 transformed the area, making it easier to reach downtown and setting the stage for Kirkwood to grow into one of Atlanta’s earliest suburbs. Officially incorporated as the city of Kirkwood in 1904, the neighborhood quickly blossomed, with its population nearly tripling between 1910 and 1915, and home values ranging from $3,000 to $15,000 by 1914. In 1922, Kirkwood was annexed into the city of Atlanta. Designed as a retreat from the bustle of downtown, Kirkwood featured wide avenues, stunning Queen Anne homes, and a small-town charm that continues to define it today.
